Because everyone’s smile is unique, the cost of dental implants can vary. It depends on your oral health, whether you need any additional procedures beforehand, and even the materials used. Your dentist in Georgetown, TX, will carefully review your options, explain what drives the cost, and help you choose a solution that’s right for you. Read on to learn more about the factors that influence the cost of dental implants.

Pre-surgery treatments

Dental exams

If your dentist doesn’t have recent X-rays of your mouth, they’ll likely need to take new imagery.1 Depending on your situation, they might even request a 3D scan, as this can allow them to view structures from different angles and assess other areas such as your sinuses or airway.2

Tooth extractions

The cost of dental implants usually doesn’t include tooth extractions, which are considered a separate part of the treatment. If you’ll need an extraction, then it’s worth asking your dentist about this when you discuss how much dental implants cost.

Bone grafts

Depending on how much bone your jaw has, your dentist might recommend a bone graft before placing your dental implant.3 This technique can increase the amount of bone that you have in your jaw, which makes it easier to place dental implants. In cases where you need an implant in your upper jaw, you may also need a sinus lift.4 This is a procedure where your sinuses are moved higher up, and a bone graft can then create extra support between your jaw and sinuses.

Number of implants

The cost of dental implants depends on whether you need just one implant, implants for multiple teeth, or your full mouth restored. Dental implants are strong enough to support several teeth, so your dentist might design a treatment plan that uses fewer implants.5

Types of implants

Most dentists use endosteal implants, which are inserted directly into the bone, almost like screws. These implants fuse to the bone over time in a process called osseointegration, which provides a strong foundation for your new artificial tooth.

However, if there’s not enough healthy jawbone, and a bone graft isn’t an option, then a subperiosteal implant could be used instead. The latter is still placed under the gum but sits on top of the bone. Even though osseointegration is not possible with these types of implants, dentists can instead create custom 3D printed implants that are tailored to your unique anatomy. 6 This allows the implant to be securely embedded in your mouth.

Materials used

Dental implant materials

Dental implants can be manufactured from either titanium or zirconia (a type of ceramic).7 Titanium is more popular due to its durability, but your dentist might recommend choosing zirconia implants if you’re allergic to metal or have an autoimmune disease.8

Crown materials

An artificial tooth called a crown will be placed to cover your dental implant.9 Most patients choose a ceramic or porcelain crown as they provide the most natural look, but they aren’t the only material available. Crowns can be made of palladium, nickel, chromium, resin, and even gold.

The bottom line

There are many factors that can affect the cost of dental implants because each patient’s situation is unique. Your dentist in Georgetown, TX, can review your individual needs and help design a treatment plan that fits both your needs and your budget.
