A Nation Alarmed – The 27th Amendment and the Growing Crisis of Confidence

Pakistan is standing at a very tense moment. The delay in issuing the new notification under the 27th Amendment has caused deep worry among citizens, but the real concern is what may happen once the notification is finally issued. The 27th Amendment, which grants a lifetime position and lifetime legal immunity to the Field Marshal, has created strong public resistance. Many people, lawyers, and political observers believe that such power concentrated in one office goes against democratic principles and removes the possibility of accountability. This is why a large part of the public is now demanding that the amendment be rolled back.

Memories of November 26, 2024 still add to the public’s anxiety. Many Pakistanis believe that the use of force against protesters in Islamabad’s D-Chowk that day was excessive. Human rights groups, political workers, and analysts have raised serious questions about the events of that day, pointing to arrests, pressure tactics, and actions they consider irregular. Although state institutions reject these claims, the trust of ordinary citizens has been shaken.

The situation became more alarming with Imran Khan’s continued isolation for two weeks, during which no one has been allowed to meet him. Reports about how his family members and party workers have been treated have created even more public frustration. Many people believe this is part of a wider attempt to apply political pressure, and this belief is growing stronger on social media, in public discussions, and among political circles.

The possible issuance of the notification under the 27th Amendment has become the center of national concern. Many fear that once the Field Marshal is officially declared Chief of Defence Forces under this amendment, he will gain lifetime protection and will never be answerable for any action. Legal voices warn that permanent immunity, expanded authority, and the absence of legal checks could create a structure of power that is extremely difficult to reverse. For many Pakistanis, this is not about bringing stability — it is about establishing a system where power exists without accountability.

These concerns have led many citizens to ask whether this move will reshape the balance of power in a way that future political processes and transitions become impossible. They fear this may be a long-term shift that weakens democracy and strengthens unchecked authority.

Public unrest in KP and growing anxiety in Balochistan show that the tension is not limited to one region. Many people feel that the current instability is being used to pressure political governments or influence national outcomes.

Because of these developments, demands for clarity, accountability, and restoration of constitutional balance have grown louder. People are now calling for the rollback of the 27th Amendment, transparency regarding Imran Khan’s situation, release of political workers, and a return to democratic norms.

Pakistan is at a defining moment. Decisions taken now will shape the country for years to come. The public is asking for honesty, accountability, and protection of their democratic rights. It is time for the state to listen carefully, understand the concerns of its people, and respond with responsibility. Ignoring this moment may turn today’s crisis of confidence into a deeper crisis of stability.
