New York Mayor is being touted as an “undeniable power broker” after his slate of radical socialist endorsees won in state and national races on Tuesday night. This might seem like good news for Republicans, since it can make the national Democrats look extreme.
But the broadcast networks have a serious problem finding anyone too extreme on the left. The Democrats will try to absorb these radicals and cater to them, and its already obvious the networks are downplaying their radicalism and playing up their mass appeal to voters.
On Monday night, “PBS News Hour” pundit Amy Walter strangely tried to claim that a victory by the radicals in New York didnt mean anything nationally, that somehow we wont know the tilt of the Democrats until the Michigan primary in August â where radical doctor Abdul el-Sayed is leading in the Senate primary race.
On Wednesday morning, CBS reporter Ed OKeefe sounded a similar note, that this “wont be a factor in every race across the country, and Democrats certainly arent nominating socialists everywhere else.” But there are a running across the country. In Wisconsin, gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong announced that her “perfect world” is one without prisons.
OKeefe also downplayed the extreme views these Democrats have in Israel, favoring Hamas and the dissolution of Israel. He described their view vaguely as “the U.S. relationship with Israel needs to be rethought.”
On “World News Tonight,” ABC reporter Jay OBrien called it an “earthquake,” and concluded: “Who will benefit? President Trump already trying to put his stamp on all of this, branding the winners as communists.” When winning candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier was asked on MS NOW about the communist charge, she refused to answer it.
ABCs “The View” actually had a debate on Mamdani’s endorsements. Alyssa Farah Griffin warned that the Democrats could become captured by extremists, so she was implying Mamdani was the anti-MAGA. She pointed out Chevalier had tweeted that ‘Obama is evil,’ ‘Biden is a rapist and a war criminal,’ and ‘bleep .’ But Joy Behar was comparing socialism to fire trucks and garbage trucks. Sunny Hostin announced: “New York is the nation’s cultural and political capital and that’s just a fact. And the Democratic Socialists of America is a force to be reckoned with at this point.”
National Public Radio brought on Mamdani on Wednesday nights “All Things Considered” newscast, but only considered how well he was doing. Scott Detrows slate of softball questions included this: “This is the latest in a series of primary wins this spring and summer for democratic socialist candidates. There’s been wins in , Philadelphia, here in Washington, D.C.’s mayor race, now New York congressional races. Why, to you, does the DSA message seem to be resonating so well right now?”
Mamdani happily answered: “It speaks to the fact that working people are fed up. And when we look at this country, we know that the only majority that really exists is that of the working class.” Mamdani used variants of “working people” or “working class” 13 times in the interview.
On the “PBS News Hour,” New York Public Radio reporter Brigid Bergin sounded like she was merely regurgitating Mandanis spin: “They are definitely more pro-Palestinian and take a lot of objection to the current position of the or its traditional position when it comes to Israel and being an ally of Israel without question. They also take a strong stand on things like Medicare for All, making sure there’s universal childcare, essentially talking about making more accessible benefits that would make the lives of working people easier.”
A smidgen of balance emerged on Thursdays “CBS Mornings.” Co-host Vladimir Duthiers described the socialist agenda in positive terms, as “stronger tenant protections, more publicly built housing, higher taxes on top earners, expanded childcare, expanded public transportation.” He touted it as “re
